GREENWOOD

Published by Michael Kass

Seattle’s Greenwood neighborhood is just down the street from the Woodland Park Zoo, up the street from Green Lake, and surrounded by both modest and elegant residential streets. The Chamber of Commerce likes to call it “Seattle’s hidden gem,” and that may be exactly right. Here you’ll join individuals who have called Greenwood home for decades, as well as new families attracted by the opportunity to become first-time homebuyers. An eclectic assortment best categorizes the architecture within this neighborhood and you can find a sweet Tudor, a charming bungalow, a modest or high-end condo, or choose from a number of houses built to “green’ specifications.

One of the best things about Greenwood is its strong sense of community; block parties, art walks, tree plantings and parades bring residents out into the streets. The past few years have seen a marked change in the little “downtown,” and the older businesses thrive beside trendy newer ones. Cafés, a brew pub, a wide assortment of ethnic restaurants––Mediterranean, Nepalese, Thai, Mexican, Italian gelato––make the neighborhood hub at 85th Ave. North and Greenwood––a lively spot on weekend evenings. Numerous antique shops have long thrived here, and the newly remodeled library, a beauty school, grocery stores, and every amenity you might need for day-to-day life make this a self-sufficient neighborhood, yet within an easy access to everything Seattle offers.

Highway 99 will zip you to Westlake in downtown Seattle in less than 15 minutes, or a direct “back road” provides easy access to Ballard, Elliott Ave., the waterfront and Pike Place market. Several major Metro bus routes also make Greenwood an ideal place to commute from if your work place is downtown. If you’re looking for just the right neighborhood to settle down in, for a while or a lifetime, Greenwood has all the right attributes.
