Renters in Conversions protected by new bill

Published by Michael Kass at 11:54 am under Condo Conversions, Condo News

A bill that is proceeding through the Washington State Senate and house that will protect current renters in apartment buildings that will be converted to rentals by the owners is in its final stages.

The bill would require building owners to give tenants a longer notice of the actual conversion.  Currently the notice is 90 days and that would increase to 120 days.   Relocation assistance would be increased from the $500  to three months rent.  Work on the building itself might not be permitted during this period.  This would surely help renters avoid construction inconveniences.

I believe this is a good development for the renters although finding affordable rentals in the Seattle area is becoming more and more difficult.  I am very interested in what the final passage of this bill will look like
